An extremely user-friendly, secure live virtual care app for senior citizens in a senior care facility.

Project Summary

CanConnect is an iOS virtual care app which uses a specially designed interface and hardware on a tablet to create an easy-to-use video chat tool for those with cognitive decline or other impairments which may make alternatives difficult to navigate. The Skype-like application has two main user types: Configurators (including Clinicians and ‘Other Users’ such as family and friends of the Senior user type) and Seniors (Type A with limited cognitive decline and Type B with significant cognitive decline).

When the user wants to contact someone, they simply touch that person’s photo and a call is immediately initiated. Those who are involved in the care and support of that individual can initiate and receive calls using the application installed on their device.

The person who sets up the network and manages the account (the configurator) can select the features that are appropriate for the individual at the centre of care.

The Challenge

CanAssist identified that there was a gap in services available to connect seniors or people with dementia or cognitive disabilities with their caretakers, family or friends. Services like Skype or other video calling applications proved too confusing for many senior citizens to navigate and use. CanConnect resulted from this need to keep the aging population socially connected.

How it Works

The combination of Configurator and Client modes within the same application will allow people with a wide range of barriers to communicate easily and securely. Together, these features make iOS/Android devices into a single-purpose device, allowing use of the CanConnect application without the other challenges involved with using a smartphone or a tablet.

In its simplest form, a tablet will show the user (the client) a gallery of photos of family members and other care providers who are selected for their CanConnect network.

Configurator Mode

The configurator mode is designed to be used by those who provide support and care to vulnerable individuals, including seniors. They can do the following:

Check CanConnect Number; View Call Logs; Configure Availability & Calling; Favourites & Filtering; Add a Contact; Configure Settings; Switch To Client Mode.

The virtual care app can be used by a variety of community health and social service workers, clinicians, as well as family and friends to connect with those they care for, whether they are assessing a client’s well-being, delivering a service remotely, or staying connected with loved ones who may be isolated and vulnerable.

Client Mode

The client-user mode of CanConnect is designed for people with a wide range of physical and/or cognitive challenges who are unable to use conventional applications, computers or phones. This includes people who have conditions associated with:

  • aging & dementia
  • frailty
  • cognitive and developmental disabilities
  • brain injuries
  • physical disabilities

Custom Case

The optional custom-case enhances the ease of use and security of CanConnect. It restricts access to the broader functionality of the iPad and makes it possible for individuals with a wide range of barriers to reliably access the app as independently as possible.

The combination of these two technologies will allow people with a wide range of barriers to communicate easily and securely with family, friends, caregivers and clinicians in real-time video over the Internet.

The Custom Case has been designed to fit the iPad 10.2 inch 7th Generation version.

The Features

Video Calling

User Modes
Settings
To initiate a video call, tap the call button next to your online contact in config mode or tap on the online contact in client mode. Once in a call in config mode, you can choose to hide your video, mute yourself, flip the camera or hang up. In client mode, the user may only hang up. This setting can be disabled as well as the decline call button so that the user cannot hang up or choose to decline the call.
The CanConnect number is the unique identifier and is used when adding contacts. It can be located in the top left hand corner of the screen next under the Call Log.

The Call Log button can be used to see calls that were placed, received and missed. This can be found at the top left corner.

There isn't much you can do in Client mode except make a call to someone who is online, or answer/decline an incoming call.

To switch back to configurator mode, press and hold anywhere on the screen for 5 seconds. Tap the grey lock icon that will appear in the center bottom of the screen.

Enter the numbers backwards and hit submit.

From settings, a configurator can customize the app. This section includes how to configure the following:

- Account Settings
- Client User Settings
- Availability
- Sleep Mode
- Voice Messages
- Notifications

Technologies Used

This telehealth app development project is an iOS app built using Swift, while the Android app was built in Kotlin. The backend relies on NodeJS and MongoDB.
